Celebrate 10 years of the Model Alliance

Founded in 2012, the Model Alliance has been at the forefront of advancing labor rights in the fashion industry for almost a decade. But, in the words of Founder & Executive Director Sara Ziff, we’re “at the beginning of a very long fight.”

We’ve accomplished a lot in ten years, thanks to community members like you. Here are some highlights:

  1. Passed the Child Model Act, which extended labor protections to children who work as models in New York State.

  2. Passed the Talent Protections Act, which requires talent agencies in California to educate models and other performers about sexual harassment and eating disorders.

  3. Launched the nation’s only industry-specific support line, MA Support.

  4. Conducted the largest study to date on eating disorders in the modeling industry.

  5. Led dozens of Know Your Rights workshops and awareness-raising events.

  6. Campaigned against the mistreatment of models and employees at Victoria’s Secret, leading to the replacement of the former CEO.

  7. Assisted hundreds of individuals with navigating unemployment during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovered thousands of dollars in stolen wages.

  8. Petitioned for the New York State legislature to pass the Adult Survivors Act, which would allow time-barred survivors to pursue justice in court.

  9. Supported the passage of the Garment Worker Protections Act in California, which enforces fair compensation and holds fashion brands accountable for unpaid wages.

  10. Developed the RESPECT Program, a private sector initiative that invites companies in the fashion industry to make an enforceable commitment to stop trafficking and other forms of abuse.

And by 2032, we envision a global fashion industry free from harassment and abuse, where creativity and self-expression flourish. Give in honor of our ten year anniversary and to ensure another decade of impact.
